Volkswagen Key Covers

Volkswagen has made its folding "switchblade" key in more than one generation: press the silver button and the blade swings out. Alongside it sit fixed fobs with no folding blade, from the chrome-topped MQB-era key to the glossy asymmetric key of the Golf 8 and ID. models. Every outline below comes in hand-stitched Alcantara; some also in micro-suede or carbon fibre.

Blade button, button count, chrome

  1. Silver release button on the side? Look at the first four rows; a running-man panic button means Rectangular Panic.
  2. No blade: five buttons is the Alarm Style; four, with sliding-door buttons, the Sliding Door key.
  3. Three buttons: follow the chrome (top, base, teardrop rails or a framed emblem). Glossy black with off-centre buttons is the Asymmetrical Style.

Keyless Access, flat fobs and phone keys

  • VW calls its keyless locking and starting system Keyless Access. Its US guide for the Golf GTI and Golf R: slip a hand behind the handle to unlock (twice opens every door), touch the outer sensor to lock. In an ID.4, pressing the brake with a valid key aboard switches on the drive system.
  • e-Golf owners on MyVWeGolf.com say the driver's keyhole hides under a plastic cap beside the handle, and that holding a dead fob to a marked spot right of the steering column lets the car start.
  • In Europe, VW's Digital Key now works in Samsung Wallet on ID. models with the "Preparation for Digital Key" package: UWB for hands-free entry, an NFC tap to unlock and start.
