Ford Key Covers

Ford calls its push-button-start key the Intelligent Access key: grab the front door handle and the car unlocks, and a mechanical blade hidden inside opens the driver's door if the battery runs low. The body around it varies, which is why we list the Focus, Kuga, F-150 and Explorer under more than one cover. Each Alcantara cover is sewn for a single outline, with the button icons raised on the surface.

Reading the key in your hand

With three buttons, the outline decides: a rounded oval, a wedge that narrows, a blocky rectangle or a top edge cut at a slant. Tapered and Rectangular share a round centre lock button, so judge those two by the body. A silver face built round a circular centre button points to the Center-Ring keys, and five buttons with remote start to the five-button fob. As a rough guide, we list the oval, tapered and asymmetrical keys for European models such as the Focus, Fiesta, Kuga and Puma, and the rectangular, Center-Ring and five-button keys for the F-150, Explorer and Ranger. MyKey, sleeping fobs and phone keys

  • MyKey. Ford lets you turn every key but one into a MyKey that caps top speed, limits volume to 45% and mutes the audio until seatbelts are fastened. Ford advises labelling it to tell it from the admin key; a different cover colour does that.
  • Sleeping fob. What Car? reports that Ford's keyless fobs for the Fiesta and Focus, later the Kuga, Puma and Mustang Mach-E, switch off once left still for over 40 seconds, so a relay box can't pick up their signal. Picking the key up wakes it.
  • Phone As A Key. On models such as the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning, the Ford app turns up to four phones into keys. Ford still recommends carrying the fob; early Lightning trucks got the feature by over-the-air update.
