Land Rover Key Covers

Land Rover and Range Rover smart keys carry the same five functions on the front: lock, unlock, tailgate, headlamps and panic alarm. The covers here are cut for the two shapes those buttons come in. The rectangular key, with chrome trim down both sides and the oval badge on its face, has been supplied across the range. The block key groups four buttons in a square, sets the panic button apart below them and spells out RANGE ROVER along its side strip. Both come in Alcantara, carbon fibre, hand-crafted leather and goatskin.

Oval badge or side lettering?

Hold the key with the buttons facing you. Oval badge and plain chrome sides: rectangular. Panic button on its own under a square of four, and the name written along the side: block. Both shapes turn up on Range Rover models, which is why the outline matters more than the model name.

Activity Key, hidden blade and relay protection

  • Activity Key. The water-resistant wristband lets you leave the key fob behind. Land Rover's Discovery fitting instructions say to put the fob inside, close the doors and, within 30 seconds, hold the Activity Key against the “D” on the tailgate to lock; to unlock, press the tailgate switch and touch the “D” again. The newer wristband adds an LCD screen and works with keyless entry.
  • Emergency blade. Per the Range Rover Sport quick start guide, the smart key hides a key blade: slide the side section up, pull it out, unfold it, then lever off the door lock cover marked with a key symbol.
  • Locking habits. JLR says cars equipped with its Ultra-Wide Band key technology are not vulnerable to relay attacks, and advises pressing lock twice within three seconds to arm the alarm. Holding lock and unlock together for three seconds, with the car unlocked, switches between unlocking only the driver's door and unlocking all doors.
