Mercedes-Benz Key Covers

Start with the top of your Mercedes-Benz SmartKey. The chrome-sided key has a plastic tip that plugs into the dashboard ignition slot, as on the C-Class (W204), E-Class (W212) and S-Class (W221). Newer models use tipless keys that stay in your pocket: the Teardrop key, also in an AMG version, and the rounder Contemporary key.

Tip, frame, ruler

A tip for the dashboard slot means the chrome-sided key; then count the buttons. No tip? A broad silver band sweeping into a horseshoe loop is the Teardrop key, a rounder body with metal edges the Contemporary key. Our model lists overlap here, so go by the key. A 3-button Contemporary key measures 82 × 41 mm (normal) or 70 × 35 mm (mini).

Emergency key, Start/Stop button, KEYLESS-GO switch-off

  • The chrome-sided key hides a removable emergency key. A Mercedes-Benz dealer guide says to release the tab at the bottom of the fob to pull it out; it is also used to release the battery cover.
  • On KEYLESS-GO cars with that key, the Start/Stop button can be removed and the key used in the slot as a back-up, the Mercedes-Benz Club of America explains, a reason to pick the open-tip carbon cover. Later cars have a fixed button: a key that isn't detected goes in the cupholder marked with a key symbol.
  • A Mercedes-Benz owner's manual says the key functions can be switched off when parking somewhere busy or out of sight, or to save the battery. Starting the car with the key in the centre-console stowage compartment switches them back on.

Still unsure? Send a photo of the key face up, ideally beside a ruler, on WhatsApp (+370 63170051) or to info@vietiki.com and we'll name the right cover.
