Porsche Key Types: Ring, Slot or Blade, and the Cover Cut for Each

Porsche Has More Than One Key

Most Porsche keys are shaped like a miniature sports car, so it's easy to assume they're all the same. They aren't. We make covers and shells for four different keys: an older one with a metal ring at the base, a newer one with a rectangular slot, a four-button key for the electric Macan, and an older wedge-shaped key with a metal blade. A cover cut for one will not sit right on another.

You don't need a model year or a manual to find yours. Everything you need is on the key itself, and every photo below shows the original key without a cover. Each of our covers is cut for one exact key, the one in the photo on its product page, and not for every key of the same type. Types A and B come in several versions, with three or four buttons, so match your key to the photo before you pick a material.

Three Questions to Find Your Key

  1. What's at the bottom of the key? A small metal ring loop is Type A. A slot is Type B or Type C: Type B has chrome trim around a glossy black body, and Type C is a rounded, all-black key with the crest on its face. A metal blade sticking out of a black, rounded head is the older Wedge key.
  2. Count the buttons. Three is the usual layout. Types A and B also come with four, and Type C always has four.
  3. Match the photo. The photo under each key below is the exact key our covers are cut for. If your key looks different, for example a four-button Type A or B, go to "Other Type A and Type B Keys" further down.

Find Your Porsche Key

The car-shape keys: Types A, B and C

Three keys share the same sports-car outline, and the base is the quickest way to tell them apart. Send us a picture of your key if you can't decide.

Porsche Type A key with three buttons and a metal ring loop at the base

Type A: Classic Car-Shape

A small metal ring loop at the very bottom, a chrome head with a dark red strip under the crest, and three buttons: unlock, lock and rear lid.

These covers are cut for this exact key, not for every key with a metal ring loop. Check the chrome head, the red strip and the three buttons before you order.

Alcantara · Suede · Goatskin · Leather

Shop this key: Alcantara, goatskin, leather or suede (choose Type A).

Porsche Type B key with three buttons and a rectangular slot at the base

Type B: Signature Car-Shape

The same outline, but the base ends in a rectangular slot instead of a metal ring, inside chrome trim around a glossy black body. Three buttons: unlock, lock and rear lid.

These covers are cut for this exact key, not for every key with a slot at the base. Check the chrome trim, the slot and the three buttons before you order.

Alcantara · Suede · Goatskin · Leather

Shop this key: Alcantara, goatskin, leather or suede (choose Type B).

Porsche Type C slimline key with four buttons and the crest on its face

Type C: Slimline Car-Shape

A rounded black key with the crest on its face at the top, a glossy rim and four buttons in a recessed panel: front luggage compartment, unlock, lock and tailgate, from top to bottom.

The key of the electric Macan (2024 to 2026). Porsche's own Macan Electric key page notes that the unlock and front luggage compartment functions have changed compared with earlier models, so check the layout before you rely on it from memory.

All four covers are cut for this key. There is no leather cover and no painted shell for it.

Alcantara · Suede · Goatskin · Carbon

Shop this key: Alcantara, goatskin, carbon or suede (choose Type C).

The older wedge key

An older design, with the metal blade at the base instead of a ring loop or a slot.

Porsche wedge key with three buttons and a metal blade at the base

Wedge 3-Button

A black, rounded head with three buttons and a metal blade sticking out of the base.

The carbon cover is a two-piece shell with a crest cutout and an open slot at the top for your key ring. Choose "Air outlet: Yes" for the vented side style or "No" for clean, solid edges.

Other Type A and Type B Keys

Types A and B come in other versions too, including four-button keys. Our soft covers are not cut for them. Two products are made for these keys: the carbon cover for Type A or Type B, and the Painted Key Shell. The photos below are the key photos from their product pages.

Four Porsche Type A keys without covers: three with three buttons and one with four

Type A keys. The four keys on the product page of the Carbon Key Fob Cover - Classic Car-Shape: three with three buttons and one with four (bottom left). If your key is one of these, that cover is cut for it.

Five Porsche Type B keys without covers: three with three buttons and two with four

Type B keys. The five keys on the product page of the Carbon Key Fob Cover - Signature Car-Shape: three with three buttons and two with four (top left and top middle). If your key is one of these, that cover is cut for it.

Painted Key Shell. The Painted Key Shell shows the same Type A and Type B keys, with three or four buttons, and you pick Key type A or B when you order. On its product page, Type B is labelled "Next-Gen Car-Shape". There is no Type C shell.

Which Product Fits Your Key

A soft cover wraps the key in a material and marks each button on top, so it is cut for one exact key: the one in the photo on its card above. The carbon cover is a rigid two-piece composite shell that snaps together around the key. The Painted Key Shell is a set of high-gloss painted ABS panels that click onto the key's body, sealed with a UV clear coat, with cutouts that leave the buttons, the crest and the emergency-blade release free.

Your key What fits
Type A, exactly like the photo on its card (3 buttons) Alcantara, suede, goatskin or leather cover, or the Painted Key Shell
Type A, one of the four keys in the Type A photo (3 or 4 buttons) Carbon Classic cover or the Painted Key Shell
Type B, exactly like the photo on its card (3 buttons) Alcantara, suede, goatskin or leather cover, or the Painted Key Shell
Type B, one of the five keys in the Type B photo (3 or 4 buttons) Carbon Signature cover or the Painted Key Shell
Type C (4 buttons) Alcantara, suede, goatskin or carbon cover (no shell, no leather)
Wedge (3 buttons) Carbon cover

Then Choose the Material

Once you know which products fit your key, the rest is feel, protection and price.

Material Price Feel Colors
Suede €29 Soft, velvety 4
Goatskin €32 Soft, natural grain 8
Hand-Crafted Leather €37 Smooth, hand-stitched, ages with a patina 3
Alcantara €39 Matte, grippy, motorsport feel 9 or 10, depending on the key
Painted Key Shell €38 High-gloss paint under a UV clear coat 23
Carbon €72 to €75 (Wedge €81) Rigid two-piece shell Black, red or silver

The suede case comes with a choice of suede lanyard or metal carabiner keychain. If your Porsche has a leather interior, our Alcantara vs Leather comparison goes deeper on the trade-offs, our care guide covers keeping Alcantara looking new, and The Ultimate Guide to Car Key Fob Covers covers every material in detail.

Good to Know Before You Order

  • A cover won't get in the way of Entry & Drive. On cars with it, you can unlock, lock and start with the key in your pocket, as Porsche's 911 quick start guide describes. Our soft covers are thin and non-metallic, with the buttons marked on top, and the painted shell is ABS with no metal shielding, so locking, unlocking and keyless entry work as normal.
  • Know your battery. Read the code on the old cell before you buy a new one. One Porsche dealer's guide lists a CR2032 coin cell and says to push the metal blade out of the casing first, then turn the battery cover marked "open". Your owner's manual is the final word for your car.
  • A flat key battery won't strand you. Porsche keys carry an emergency key for the door lock, which the same 911 quick start guide describes. Your owner's manual covers emergency unlocking and starting for your model.
  • Same model, different key. Year and trim change which key a Porsche ships with, so go by the key in your hand rather than the model name. The Macan is the clearest example: the combustion-engine models use Type A, the electric one uses Type C.
Still not sure which key you have? Send a photo of the front and back of your key, plus your Porsche's model and approximate year, on WhatsApp (+370 63170051) or to info@vietiki.com, and we'll tell you which cover or shell fits before you order.
